Leila had telephoned Rand from the hospital shortly after eleven o’clock. Now, at one thirty, she was hurrying back to her hotel in the company of a grim-faced detective named Burke. Sergeant Feeley had agreed to her request that she be allowed to replace her torn and blood-spattered dress before questioning was resumed at police headquarters. Still, the presence of Burke at her side was a constant reminder that she was far from free. Sergeant Feeley obviously had no intention of turning her loose until he had the full story, or until the man named Grazer was safely behind bars.

“I’ll wait here,” Detective Burke told her when they reached the door of her room. “Make it fast.”

Inside, Leila got the first good look at herself in the mirror. Bandages covered the cut on her forehead and the one on her neck, and a larger bandage had been applied to her forearm. The green wool dress she liked so much was torn in one place and spotted with blood. Seeing the blood, she was reminded again of that scene in the office—Chando unfastening the clasp of the envelope, lifting the flap, and pulling out the cardboard. Then the snap of the mousetrap detonator and the flash of the explosion. She thought the memory of it would stay with her the rest of her life.

She was starting to pull the green dress over her head when the man named Grazer stepped out of the hotel bathroom, holding a silenced pistol pointed at her chest.
